Is a private yoga class better than a group class? When I first started yoga I tried both, I tried a few group classes which I really enjoyed but it wasn’t until I tried some private yoga classes with (my now dear friend) Carolyn that I really started to delve deeper into yoga, she taught me things that have stayed with my practice ever since and things that definitely helped in group classes - things like techniques for moving into asanas that I found tricky, proper alignment and how to safeguard my body in poses and, perhaps most importantly, gave me the time to relax and explore my practice in a way that I believe gave me the lifelong love of yoga and career I enjoy so much now.
The truth is some people will prefer the community of a group class, others will prefer the privacy of an individual class. I am, of course, an advocate for both so to help you decide whether you might prefer a private class I’ve listed 10 reasons why you might want to try a private yoga class. Let’s explore in more depth…
You get an individually tailored classes
A group class has to accommodate a range of different abilities and reasons for attending; now a good teacher will know how to adapt the class to suit a range of different abilities, offering different variations of yoga poses (asana) for example to suit different people. However a private class will be completely tailored to your specific needs, ability and goals allowing you to get the most out of each class. The teacher will design each session depending on what you want to work on or what your energy levels are for example and this level of tailored class allows you to explore yoga in a much more personal way.
You get feedback on technique and alignment
As I mentioned at the beginning it wasn’t until I worked with a teacher privately that I really started to explore alignment and transitions that worked for my body. Yes in a group classes I had been given the odd cues for alignment but it certainly was never as in depth as working with a teacher privately who is watching how your body moves in each pose and working with to get the full benefit of every pose that is unique to your body. For me, this was invaluable and I think one of the greatest benefits of a private yoga class as the alignment knowledge I learnt in my 1-2-1s I carried forward with me into every group class I ever took after that, and even into my yoga teacher training for that matter!
You get to practice at your pace (which might make you feel more at ease)
I’ll admit that even that, as an experienced yogi and teacher, I still find some group classes intimidating, particularly if I’m new to the style of yoga or the teacher.
In private yoga sessions you control the pace and the environment to a certain degree and this can make you feel more at ease. You could play music you like, have aromas you like, anything to make you feel comfortable and get the most out of your practice.
You’ll get to discuss things and ask questions
One of the biggest benefits of a private yoga class for me is that you can ask as many questions as you like. You'll have the opportunity to ask about and explore yoga poses in more detail, ask questions about yoga philosophy and discuss in more depth if that interests you and just feel comfortable asking questions or discussing any aspect of your practice as it arises.
You’ll learn wellbeing techniques and tools
As a women’s wellness coach I naturally incorporate wellbeing and stress reduction techniques into my private yoga classes if that’s what the client wants. Often clients come to private yoga classes with specific goals in mind such as wanting to destress or to sleep better. Alongside yoga to address specific goals I can incorporate a wide range of other tools and techniques to support you, and that you can take back to everyday and utilise whenever you need to.
You’ll gain the confidence to join group classes
Sometimes people find the thought of attending a group class a little intimidating, I completely understand! I’ve felt the same way myself in the past! I truly hope that no-one would feel that way about joining any of my group classes but a private yoga class or course of private yoga classes can support you to understand the fundamentals and terminology that may help you feel more confident joining a group class.
You get the opportunity to gain an understanding of yoga fundamentals as a complete beginner
If you’re new to yoga a private yoga class, or course of private yoga classes, can give you the opportunity to explore yoga asanas (poses) and philosophy at your own pace. You can take your time to really get to grips with all the foundational poses, their benefits and proper techniques so that your practice becomes safer, more enjoyable and more beneficial.
Not all teachers teach the same style of yoga so finding a teacher that you connect with is really important when you are a beginner, so don’t be afraid to try a few different classes locally to you to find that teacher you are inspired by.
You can fit your practice around your schedule
One of the biggest challenges of finding a yoga class is finding one that is on the right day and time that fits with other commitments. The benefit of a private class is that you can choose the days and times that work best for you. Private classes can also be held in the comfort of your own home so this can also help to fit in with work or family commitments.
Setting up a weekly yoga practice schedule that fits with your life is a great way for your practice to stay consistent and for you to support your wellbeing most effectively.
You don’t need to be distracted by others in a group environment
Yoga is a practice that helps connect mind and body and bring us into the present moment. Yet in a group class there could be around 10 people and you may find yourself comparing yourself to others, your mind wandering or being distracted by your neighbours audible breathing techniques (or even snoring!) during Savasana - all of which have happened to me in the past! These things are common and shouldn’t distract you from attending a group class, however if you do find it hard to switch off and focus on yourself during class, a private class may provide less distraction and more opportunity to really focus on your practice and simply enjoy it!
You can delve deeper into the science and philosophy of yoga
Usually yoga classes last around 1 hour which simply doesn’t allow a lot of time for the teacher to share much knowledge of yoga philosophy or science. If you find that you want to start exploring these elements of yoga more deeply, the usual option is to attend a yoga teacher training. However with a private yoga class you can discuss your growing enquiry for yoga and have the time and opportunity to explore more of this on a 1-2-1 basis with your teacher.
So there you are, a few reasons I think a private yoga class can benefit you. In my personal experience as a student, and then teacher, I feel there are huge benefits in having a private yoga class or a series of private yoga classes.
They may cost more than group classes but private yoga classes are an investment in your wellbeing on a wider level. For each private class your teacher will design a class with your unique wellbeing needs and goals in mind. They will give you the foundations for a consistent, safe and enjoyable practice, give you the confidence to explore yoga in a way that is unique to you and give you wellbeing tools and techniques you can utilise for life.
No matter where you are in your yoga journey, I really do believe that if it’s available to you, investing in a private yoga class will benefit you in so many ways.
