How to create your own wellbeing space at home

Our homes are our sanctuary, a space to eat, sleep, relax and retreat from the outside world. But when that space is shared with children, partners, dogs or cats it can be hard to find a space within our homes to truly be alone and switch off.

But this ability to be alone and switch off is vital to our wellbeing. These days we gravitate towards open plan living, it’s fantastic for socialising and spending time with family but by it’s very nature, makes it harder to find a private space to retreat to. Our daily lives are busy, it’s easy to move through the day going from one thing to the next without stopping and before you know it, it’s time for bed. But for our wellbeing we need space to be alone from time to time, we need space to be able to gather our thoughts, process our emotions and connect with ourselves. It’s only through taking time to pause and moving through these processes that we find stillness, and with stillness comes creativity and an ability to be present in the moment rather than reacting to life's daily tasks.

So here I want to share my tips for cultivating a wellbeing space at home, a small corner of your home or garden where you can truly be alone, even if it just for 5 minutes! Your spot could be a small corner by a window, it could be a corner of your bedroom, it could be a quiet nook in your garden or on your balcony or any other space that you can be completely by yourself.

Designate this spot as yours, and make sure everyone in your home is aware of it. This is the place that you can retreat to, the place you can come to clear your mind and the place where you can just be still.

Decorate your space with things that fill your heart with joy. A beautiful plant, your favourite scented candle or diffuser, books you enjoy, inspirational photos, anything you find uplifting and joyous.

Keep a journal and some pens or pencils in your spot for jotting things down as they arise, or for creative moments.

Meditate, stretch, lounge, read, listen to music - do whatever makes you feel happiest. Think of time spent in this space as absolutely and completely yours, a time to unwind, a time just for you.

Do not allow any outside stress into your space. You may have deadlines, or chores, or things that need your attention but you must allow yourself this space to come away from those even for 5 minutes. You will be able to tackle everything else much more efficiently if you do.

Allow yourself time this time every day. This is a place where you can simply experience you and bring forth who you are and what you might be.
